Become a Candidate

The Libertarian Party of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County is looking for qualified Libertarians to run for office. Our goal is to get as many candidates as possible to run for office by providing as much assistance as possible to those who would like to seek office as a Libertarian. This page is intended to be your primary resource if you want to run for office.

Before Running For Office

Prospective candidates should seek out opportunities to become involved in their community. They should seek out opportunities to get involved with issues currently impacting their community. Perspective candidates should also begin building relationships with community groups that share Libertarian ideals. It is also important to start building a campaign support structure as soon as possible. A viable candidate should have developed both sources of funding and campaign volunteers.

You may want to start by finding out which offices represent you. Then you can check the qualifications for each of the offices in which you may be interested. You may also want to check our candidate page and see for which offices LPMNDC is still seeking candidates. Then you will want to contact the appropriate agencies to officially begin your campaign. Finally we also offer some resources of use to political candidates.

STEP 1: If you are a Libertarians who would like to run for office, please use the box below to find out which elected offices represent the area in which you live.

STEP 2: Check to see for which offcies you qulaify. The following is a list of requirements for offices in each level of government:

OFFICE REQUIREMENTS
President of the United States
Elected every four years.
Next election is in 2012
Be at least 35 years of age; a natural-born citizen; and a resident within the United States for 14 years.
United States Senator
Elected for a term of six years
Next Election is in
2012 (Corker) and 2014 (Alexander)
Be at least 30 years of age; a citizen of the United States for at least 9 years; a Tennessee resident for at least 3 years; a district resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter.
United States Representative
Elected evry tow years.
Next Election is in 2010
Be at least 25 years of age; a citizen of the United States for at least 7 years; a resident of the State of Tennessee; and a qualified registered voter./TD>
Governor
Elected every four years.
Next Election is in 2010
Meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101; and be at least 30 years of age; a citizen of the United States for at least 9 years; a resident of the State of Tennessee at least seven (7) years prior to an election; and a qualified registered voter.
State Senator
Elected for a term of four years
Next Election
(Districts 19, 21, and 23 in 2010)
(District 20 in 2012)
Meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101; and be at least 30 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident of the State of Tennessee for at least 9 years; a county or district resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter.
State Representative
Elected for a term of two years.
Next Election is in 2010
Meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101; and be at least 21 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident of the State of Tennessee for at least 3 years; a county resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter.
District Councilman
Elected for a term of four years.
Next Election is in 2011
Be at least 25 years of age; a resident of Davidson County Tennessee; and a district resident for at least 6 months.
Councilman-At-Large
Elected for a term of four years.
Next Election is in 2011
Be at least 25 years of age and a resident of Davidson County Tennessee for at least 6 months.
Mayor and Vice Mayor
Elected for a term of four years.
Next Election is in 2011
Be at least 30 years of age; and a resident of Davidson County Tennessee for at least 3 years.
Register of Deeds
Elected for a term of four years.
Next Election is in 2012.
Be at least 18 years of age.
School Board Member
Elected for a term of four years.
Next Election
(districts 2, 4, 6, and 8) 2010
and (districts 1,3,5,7, and 9) 2012.

Be at least 25 years of age; a resident of Davidson County Tennessee for at least 5 years; a district resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter. Additionally, candidates shall hold no other elective or appointive public office and meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101.

STEP 3: Contact the Davidson County Election Commission to designate a campaign treasurer and get information about getting on the balot. The Davidson County Election Commission can also give information on filing deadlines. You may contact the Davidson County Election Commission at:

STEP 4: The Libertarian Party of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County will be more than happy to assist any Libertarian candidates with qualifying for ballot access (gathering nominating petition signatures). Please let the Libertarian Party of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County know if you need help or when you qualify for ballot access so that you can be placed on our candidates page. Placement on our candidates page will allow others to support your campaign.

Appointed Boards and Commissions

Contact Metro Council if you would like to get appointed to a Board and Commission. This is a great way to gain experiance in public service. Please let the Libertarian Party of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County know if you get elected or appointed to public offcie.
